  • Backing up OBIEE 12c

We will write simple batch script that backs up the most common configuration directories of an OBIEE 12c environement (we are considering a Windows installation). Here a list of some important directories of an OBIEE 12c environment. Edit the bacth simply by adding the directories that are important for you.   Repository (RPD) files: are kept beneath the Service Instances directory. We cannot directly edit these – or copy them down to our pc and edit them there. We must use the data-model-cmd to upload/download them. However, we will proceed to backing up this folder: <obiee_home>/user_projects/domains/bi/bidata/service_instances/ssi/ metadata/datamodel/customizations Web Catalog.  In this folder the dashboards, reports, prompts and all other user content is stored,…

  • OBIEE 12c: Direct Database Request Configuration (nQSError: 13017)

Direct Database Request is the ability to execute SQL statements directly against the data warehouse. DDR skips BI Server and execute the physical SQL statemente every time you open an Answer or a Dashboard. Consequwntly DDR don’t use all BI Server features like Cache Management. I use DDR when the report requirement cannot be represented into a data model, or when is very expensive the design of a data model for a simple report. To allow access to DDR, from the OBIEE Administration link, you can enable Direct Database Requests for each role, within the “Manage Privileges” Section:  After applying the above security privilege, the user is still unable to execute a direct database…

  • OBIEE 12c: Error While Downloading To Excel – There was an error processing your download. Please check with your administrator

In OBIEE 12c version 12.2.1.1.0 and later, when you try to export a large dataset to excel, you got the following message: Error While Downloading To Excel – There was an error processing your download. Please check with your administrator. and the downloaded Excel is incomplete. To solve this issue you must edit the  Config.xml located in the Domains/BI/config/fmwconfig/biconfig/OBIJH folder. Check the tag <XMLP> and edit as follow: <XMLP> <InputStreamLimitInKB>2048000</InputStreamLimitInKB> <ReadRequestBeforeProcessing>false</ReadRequestBeforeProcessing> </XMLP> Stop and restart BIEE services and retry to export the excel file.

  • Downgrade an OBIEE RPD Version

Yesterday I tried to open an RPD downloaded from the server with my desktop BI Client and I get the following error: Ok, I got this error simply because the Oracle BI client installed on my desktop was older the Oracle BI server version…. but I wondered how I could open an RPD file from an earlier version of OBI Administration. In OBIEE, we have nqgenoldverrpd.exe utility of the Admin Tool. This utility allows us to convert a RPD to a previous version. We can find this file on the path: C:\Middleware\Oracle_BI1\bifoundation\server\bin Or, in the client machine (if you have intalled only OBIEE Client): C:\Program Files\Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus Client Tools\oraclebi\orahome\bifoundation\server\bin The…

  • Migrate users and security to OBIEE 12c

To import/export security model use the Weblogic Console of OBIEE: login to console and in the left hand side click on “Security Realms“, and then click on “myrealm” in the right panel. Select the Migration tab:     The process is the same for both export and import. For export select the export sub-tab. Designate a directory ON THE SERVER. This directory must exist. Click the button and within a second or two the job’s done. The whole process of importing settings is additive only, existing settings remain untouched. So, for exaplme, if a user is in one group prior to the new security import, and the import has that…

  • OBIEE 12c, managing repository

The Repository File (RPD) contains the data models, data source details, custom calculations, dimensional details and so on that bring the power to OBIEE’s reporting capability. Editing the RPD is still performed using the Administrator tool that is installed with the OBIEE Client tools: Work with RPD in on-line and off-line mode The Administrator tool lets you edit the data model in on-line or off-line mode: In on-line mode all changes are immediately saved to the live RPD file and are available to users after a metadata refresh within OBIEE. In off-line mode you can edit an RPD file downloaded from the OBIEE server. In this case the changes are…

  • OBIEE 12c: Configure Usage Tracking

The Oracle BI Server supports the collection of usage tracking data. When usage tracking is enabled, the BI Server collects usage tracking data for each query, and it writes statistics to a usage tracking log file or inserts them directly in to a database table. After you complete migrating and configuring the 12c system, you must enable usage tracking in the NQSConfig.INI file. To configure usage tracking: Open the repository in online mode. Import the S_NQ_ACCT and the S_NQ_DB_ACCT table from the RCU schema. In the NQSConfig.INI file, set USAGE_TRACKING=YES and update the PHYSICAL_TABLE_NAME and the CONNECTION_POOL. Import the following tables to track query statistics related to the initialization block…
